Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does “metered” mean?

A: All online activities should be considered as metered by default, except where specified below under ‘Unmetered activities.’

Common examples of metered activity includes: all video/audio call services, playing or downloading audio/video content (which is either embedded or from content streaming or gaming sites), loading content to/from file sharing/ cloud storage sites.

Q: What does “unmetered mean?

A: All online activity is metered, with the exception of the below unmetered activities:

  • Static text/image web browsing: including online banking
  • Social Media: viewing static photos and text on selected sites
  • Email: sending and receiving emails on selected sites
  • Operating system software updates: downloading select PC and smartphone operating system software updates. 1

Exclusions – If you’re accessing your connection via a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or an application that does not use HTTP/HTTPS protocols, all activities will be metered, even those specified as ‘unmetered activities’. Other exclusions and fair use conditions apply. Please read our “Things you should know”

Note: This content is accurate as at 12th August 2019. The types of traffic that are unmetered are constantly subject to change – please check this page regularly for latest updates

Q: I use a lot of social media and especially Facebook. But I have used all of my “metered” data. Will I still be able to go on Facebook?

A: If you have exhausted your metered data allowance for the month, you will still be able to access websites that have embedded video content, like social media platforms or news websites, but the video and audio content may not play.

Q: When I go on websites like Facebook all the videos are playing automatically and it’s using up my “metered” data. What can I do?

A: Turning off video and audio autoplay on your social media accounts and across websites that use embedded streaming content (like videos) can help minimise your metered data usage. For more information on how to turn off autoplay videos on Facebook see here: https://ipstarbroadband.com.au/saving-data-with-facebook-video/

Q: Which image files are metered and unmetered? If it’s a static image is this jpg and png? But what about .gif images and m-jpeg files?

A: Metering decisions are not made on file types. They are made on protocol and source/destinations. The general rule is audio and video content is metered, however due to their small size, .gif files are unmetered. Static image files like .png and jpeg files are unmetered.

Q: If I already have nbn Sky Muster at home can I get Sky Muster Plus?

A: Yes, any home that already has nbn Sky Muster installed is eligible to get nbn Sky Muster Plus.
